The new film’s writer and director, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess game, for mortal bet, anywhere between Johnny, his workplace (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Drew), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a great scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose sis (Nina Foch) has worked during the gambling establishment and you may old a corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body gestures out-of like and you may threat, and Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may fashionably cocky photographs (as well as his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a low profile antique of style.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, as the an authorities inspector, along with in the score . Whilst the area comes after a familiar pattern, the newest characterizations is fresh and also the activities suitable to overbalance. Dialog try terse and you may topical, steering clear of the emotional, phoney touch. Strange digital camera angles come-along on occasion in order to heighten desire and you may temporarily arrest the attention. Good teamplay by the Robert Rossen, doubling just like the movie director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, modern author and you can associate music producer, plus supports making this a delicate creation.” [ 11 ]

Its mainly a question of seeing Mr. Powell proceed through his paces smartly when you find yourself a huge throw away from stars and you will actresses give your regular service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the good absolutely nothing woman exactly who brings forth the fresh finest in your and you can Ellen Received is the smooth and you will slinky vixen who will get him to the jams. Thomas Gomez try fatty once the villain and you may Lee J. Cobb do another type of ready tour since the a weary police inspector which finally shuts the case. A lot of consuming and smoking is carried out by the most of the concerned.” [ several ]
